Ring or Google Nest: which costs less to own?

Ring cameras save no video without a Ring Protect plan; Google Nest cameras keep limited free event history; longer cloud history requires a Google Home Premium plan. With four of each brand's cheapest camera, Ring costs about $400 less over three years ($760 for Ring vs $1,160 for Google Nest). These totals use the cheapest cloud-recording plan and exclude local-storage hardware. Pick on coverage and app first: the cheapest camera isn't always the right one for your yard.

Which to choose

  • If the monthly fee is the deciding factor, Ring is cheaper to own over three years by about $400 for four cameras.
  • Google Nest's plan buys cloud history, so your clips survive if a camera is stolen. Local storage on a camera's own card doesn't.
  • Match the app you already use: Ring lists Alexa; Google Nest lists Google Home.
