My new house came with the previous owner's cameras: now what?
First get the devices off the previous owner's account: ask the seller to remove them before closing, then factory-reset each one and set it up on your own account. If a device is still locked to their account, contact the brand's support with proof you own the home. Then decide what to keep: a working doorbell on existing wires and a floodlight on a light fixture are worth keeping; old battery cameras that need a plan often aren't.
Step by step
- Before closing: ask in writing for all cameras, doorbells, locks and hubs to be removed from the seller's accounts, with any hub or NVR left behind.
- On move-in day: change smart lock codes and remove old users, or reset the lock. Unplug cameras you haven't reset yet.
- Reset and re-add: factory-reset each device, following the brand's instructions, and set it up on your own account and Wi-Fi.
- Stuck on an old account? Contact the brand's support with proof you own the home, such as a closing document.
- Take stock of the wiring: existing doorbell wires, outdoor outlets and light fixtures are what make a good camera spot easy.
- Plan around what you keep: add the devices under "Already own" in the planner. They cost $0, and the plan fills the gaps.

If the devices are still on their account, possibly. That's the first thing to fix. Until they're removed and reset, unplug them or take the batteries out.
Is it worth keeping old cameras?
Keep what already has good power and a good view, like a wired doorbell or a floodlight camera on a light fixture. Replace cameras that need a subscription you don't want, or that no longer get software updates.
