Which Ring alternatives record without a subscription?

Every Ring camera and doorbell in our catalog saves no video without a Ring Protect plan: $4.99 a month for one device, $9.99 for every device. So the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (2nd Gen) at $44.99 costs $225 over 3 years. 11 doorbells and 28 outdoor cameras in our catalog record locally with no plan; the cheapest doorbells by 3-year cost are Wyze Video Doorbell v2 ($59.98), TP-Link Tapo D210 Battery Doorbell ($59.99) and Wyze Battery Video Doorbell ($65.98), and their 3-year cost is the hardware price. If you keep the Ring doorbell, 5 of the 8 cheapest no-plan cameras list Alexa support, which is the only layer where a Ring doorbell and a non-Ring camera meet.

What a Ring plan buys, and what leaving it costs

Ring's own plan page is the source for the free tier: without a plan you get live view, motion alerts and two-way talk, but Ring records no video of any kind. The Ring Protect tiers we record are Ring Solo at $4.99/mo, Ring Multi at $9.99/mo, Ring Pro at $19.99/mo, Virtual Security Guard at $99.00/mo. The alternatives above avoid that fee by saving video on the device, a card or a hub. What you give up is Ring's cloud history, its app and, for some models, the person and package detection that Ring bundles into the paid tiers; the no-subscription guide lists what each storage type still needs.

Illustrative: the recording path is what decides the monthly fee, not the brand name on the box.

If you keep the Ring doorbell

A Ring doorbell and a non-Ring camera never share one app. The Ring app manages Ring devices; a third-party camera lives in its maker's app, and Alexa is the shared layer when both list it. That is workable for a doorbell you already own plus two or four cameras that record for free, as long as you accept two apps for alerts. The table marks which cameras list Alexa; the Ring lock guide covers the same distinction for locks, where "Works with Ring" is a separate, documented program.

Our catalog records 8 Ring cameras and doorbells, all with the same plan rule. Their pages show the exact tier each needs; use them to price the "keep everything Ring" option against the tables above before deciding.

Before you switch

  1. Decide what you need saved: motion clips only, or continuous video, which needs a wired camera and a model that supports it.
  2. Check the storage each alternative needs: a card, a hub or built-in memory, and its cost on the model page.
  3. Check the chime or transformer for a doorbell, and whether the wired version needs existing doorbell wiring.
  4. If you keep the Ring doorbell, add the cameras in My list and read its two-app note before buying.

Related questions

Can I use a Ring doorbell without a subscription?

Yes, with limits. Without a plan you get live view, motion alerts and two-way talk, but Ring records no video of any kind. The plan is what saves video; the hardware works for live view and alerts without it. Source: Ring's plan page, checked 2026-10-28.

Do Ring alternatives work with Alexa?

Some do. The models in the tables list the ecosystems their maker names; 5 of the 8 cheapest no-plan cameras list Alexa. Alexa support means the camera can appear in the Alexa app; it does not mean it appears in the Ring app.

Will a non-Ring doorbell ring my Ring Chime?

No. A Ring Chime pairs with Ring devices. A third-party doorbell uses its own chime, an existing mechanical chime where its wired version supports one, or the maker's plug-in chime. Check the exact model page.

Can I keep my Ring doorbell and add cameras that record for free?

Yes. They run in separate apps: the Ring app for the doorbell and the camera maker's app for the cameras, with Alexa as the shared layer when both list it. My list flags the two-app setup when you add both.
