Can a home security camera read license plates?
Only close up, and only with the car nearly head-on. Axis's plate-capture guidance asks for at least 75 pixels across a European plate before its characters resolve, and 100 to 150 pixels for plate-reading software. Applied to the published lens and resolution of the 29 cameras we track, the typical camera resolves plate characters to about 16 ft in daylight; wide-angle models (120° and wider) to at most 20 ft; the Reolink RLC-820A PoE Bullet reaches furthest at about 46 ft. Software-grade detail needs the plate at half to three-quarters of that distance. Motion blur, steep angles and headlight glare at night cut these figures further.

Plate distance by camera, daylight and head-on
Distance at which a plate gets enough pixels: about 44 pixels per foot of plate width for its characters to resolve, and 59 to 88 for plate-reading software (Axis's European-plate figures expressed per foot; North American plates are narrower with similar character heights, so treat these as best-case planning numbers). Computed across each camera's full published horizontal view; a car moving at an angle, at night or in rain needs a closer camera.

What makes plates readable
- Angle: keep the camera nearly in line with the car's path; Axis recommends a total angle under 30°.
- A narrow view: a lens that frames one lane puts several times more pixels on the plate than a wide yard view.
- Shutter: a moving car blurs at the slow shutter speeds home cameras use in low light.
- Night: plates reflect light straight back, so infrared and headlights can wash them out unless the camera limits exposure.
For most homes the useful goal is a clear view of the car and the person at it, which needs far fewer pixels. The driveway guide covers that, and a second, closer camera at the end of the drive is how people add plate detail when they need it.
Related questions
Can a 4K security camera read license plates?
Sometimes, if the plate is close and head-on. Resolution only helps when the lens is narrow enough to put enough pixels on the plate; a 4K camera with a very wide lens spreads its pixels across the whole yard. The table shows the distance for each model from its published lens and resolution.
Where should a camera go to capture plates?
Aim along the driveway so plates are seen nearly head-on: Axis recommends a total angle under 30 degrees between the camera and the car's direction. Use a narrow view of the lane, a fast shutter for moving cars and infrared light at night, which plates reflect.
Will my doorbell or driveway camera read plates at night?
Usually not. Plates are retroreflective, so headlights and the camera's own infrared light can overexpose them, and slower night shutters blur moving cars. Dedicated plate cameras limit gain and shutter time for this; general-purpose home cameras rarely let you.
