Do solar and battery security cameras work in winter?
Yes, but expect much less. Lithium batteries hold less charge in the cold and won't recharge below freezing, so we halve battery estimates for cold climates. Solar panels still help in December and January if they face south, stay clear of snow and sit under an eave. For the spot that matters most, a plug-in or wired camera is the safer choice in Canada and the northern US.
Charging intervals, mild vs cold winters
Battery-only estimates at 10 motion events a day, as if the solar panel produced nothing. Brand claims are converted with 20 seconds per event, and cold climates are multiplied by 0.5. A solar panel stretches these numbers, sometimes indefinitely, depending on sun.

Making solar work north of the 45th parallel
- Face the panel south and tilt it steeply (45° or more). Winter sun is low.
- Keep snow off it: mount under the eave or high on a wall where drifts can't reach.
- Mind the shade. A spot that gets sun in July can sit in the roof's shadow all of December.
- Turn down the traffic. Motion zones that skip the street cut false triggers, and each trigger costs battery.
- Wire the key spot. If you have a porch light or outlet at the front door or garage, a plug-in or floodlight camera there won't die on the coldest night.
Turn on "Winters often drop below freezing" in the planner. It halves the battery estimates and adds winter notes to each spot.
Related questions
Do solar camera panels charge when covered in snow?
Barely. Even a thin layer of snow blocks most light. Mount the panel under the eave or at a steep angle so snow slides off, and brush it clear after storms.
At what temperature do battery cameras stop charging?
Most lithium-ion cells shouldn't charge below 0 °C (32 °F), and cameras block charging to protect the battery. The camera can still run off stored charge until it's empty.
Are AA-battery cameras better in the cold?
Lithium AA cells (used by Blink and Reolink's MagiCam) handle cold better than alkaline, but they still lose runtime and have to be replaced rather than recharged.
