Plan the positions before you choose cameras

This free security camera planner starts with a house, townhouse or condo template. Choose the closest layout, mark the entrances and areas you care about, and keep your installation constraints selected. You can adjust camera directions and positions before building a device list in the final step.

Planning a Canadian home

Product prices in this version are recorded Canadian listings in CAD, kept per model and never converted from US prices; a model without a recorded Canadian listing stays unpriced. Subscription fees use the Canadian plan price where the brand publishes one. Battery and solar cameras have separate operating and charging temperature limits, so a camera that keeps recording in January may still stop charging below freezing; the winter guide explains what to check at each mount. Recording evidence includes three reviewed Canadian configurations.

What the placement tool does

  • Separates the areas you must cover from optional views.
  • Shows illustrative camera views and obstructions in a home template.
  • Keeps no-drill mounting as a constraint rather than silently replacing it with wall mounts.
  • Lets you continue to product choices and save the plan in a shareable link.

Compare system costs and recording after cancellation

In the Devices step, save your current selection as alternative A, change products or budgets to create B, and compare 3-year and 5-year estimates. The calculator includes selected hardware, a per-card allowance, other installation costs you enter, and either reviewed cloud offers or a custom monthly bill for the whole system. Bundles are counted once; owned items have no new purchase cost. Unpriced requirements stay visible.

Open the recording panel to inspect local recording, playback, continuous video, smart detection and paid cloud history for reviewed model/variant configurations. Each reviewed claim links to its official source and conditions. Save and share the device selections, budget inputs and comparison in one plan link. Recording evidence covers 12 US and 3 Canadian configurations. Reviewed US Tapo and Wyze cloud offers account for quantity, shared plans and monthly versus annual billing; other offers stay unpriced.

Start from a reviewed recording configuration, then change the camera quantity, region and installation to fit your home.

Check recording during an outage

In the Devices step, choose internet loss, a disconnected router or household power loss without backup. Compare new recording, local App replay, remote access and phone alerts under the same failure on both A and B. Eight regional configurations have reviewed evidence or explicit gaps. Official guidance, dependency inferences and unknowns stay separate; the choice is saved in your link. No battery runtime or post-reboot recovery is promised.

Keep, expand or replace existing equipment

Move exact catalog equipment from your inventory into the installation as owned, then compare keeping it with buying more or replacing specific units. The Planner saves your current selection as A and shows the proposed B before you apply it. Owned purchases cost zero; new devices are priced in your selected market. Storage, setup and recording budgets need review after the change. Try the owned-camera comparison examples.

What to check at your home

The drawing is not a surveyed floor plan or a guarantee of identification, night vision or Wi-Fi coverage. Check real dimensions, mounting instructions, obstacles and lighting at the property. The methodology page explains the assumptions behind the examples.
